Vision And Mission

LIFE IN THE TOWNSHIP

South Africa is a popular tourist destination and Africa’s wealthiest country, but also a country ravaged by enormous divergence. In the country’s townships poverty, addiction and violence are all part of everyday life. Each day 40 people are murdered. Every fourteenth second a woman is raped, and the number of people with HIV is the highest in the world. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has resulted in an increase in OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children). It was estimated that, in 2015, South Africa will have 5.7 million orphans – a third of all children in the country – who have lost one or both parents (Medical Research Center (MRC), 2007). At Project Playground we meet and engage with OVC’s on a daily basis. The children often need extended support in order to have an equal chance as their peers. Project Playground works on an individual basis and thus assists in protecting and supporting these children through counseling and also with their everyday practical lives.

Officially about 50% of South Africa’s young adults are unemployed, but in the socially vulnerable townships the number can be as high as 80%. Growing up in a township is a constant struggle, and the need for a place where children can be children and where they can be seen and heard on their own terms, is enormous. When you start caring about your own life and have a positive outlook on the future, you can break negative patterns and exclusion. Here is where Project Playground’s work begins.

OUR VISION IS A SAFE WORLD WHERE EVERY CHILD GROWS UP WITH A BELIEF IN THE FUTURE AND THE POSSIBILITY TO INFLUENCE THEIR OWN LIFE

Many things influence a child’s life and future; our role is to provide a sanctuary where children have the opportunity to develop their self-esteem, ambition and belief in the future. Each individual is part of a community and each community is part of a society, and so the world is developing. What children and young people do in their spare time is important, also for society. A meaningful spare time provides an opportunity to grow as a person in everyday life as well as an individual in the world. Therefore, we strive towards providing a place where children are allowed to be children and where they can grow and become confident, competent and well functioning individuals on their own terms. This through recreational sports and educational activities.

WITH GOOD ROLE MODELS WE FOSTER INDIVIDUALS AND COPE WITH PROBLEMS WHERE SOCIETY FAILS

In the contact with adulthood, there are many situations in a child’s life where problems might arise; at home, in school or dealing with authorities. There are also many times when there are no adults around, when children are forced to be their own compasses. With us they get to meet respectful adults who take them seriously and who show them that there is a different path. Adults who have a comprehensive view of the child’s environment and represent a continuous and secure contact throughout the child’s upbringing. Adults who can take a stand against negative behavior, but also inspire and function as carriers of values in the community. We offer a sanctuary away from the insecurity that characterizes a lot of children’s lives.

OUR MISSION IS TO GIVE CHILDREN AND YOUTH BETTER OPPORTUNITIES IN LIFE THROUGH A MEANINGFUL SPARE TIME

Through self-esteem, ambition, self-confidence, responsibility and community people get the tools to influence their own lives. We create opportunities for vulnerable children and youth by strengthening their personal and social development. When you care about your own life and have a positive look on the future, you can break negative patterns and exclusion. Therefore, we work on an individual level with inspiring, motivating and engaging children and youth to seize their inner strength and potential.
